Exploring the Joy of Nonfiction Reading and Writing

In the Classroom: Spotlight on Science Poetry

Since
April is poetry month, I thought I’d share ten of my favorite science and
nature poetry books for children. Most of these authors have created many
wonderful books. If you aren’t familiar with their work, I urge you to visit
their websites to see what else they’ve written for young readers.

Forest Has a Song by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater and Robbin Gourley

A Leaf Can Be by Laura Purdie Salas
and Violeta Dabija

Leaf Litter Critters by Leslie Bulion and
Robert Meganck

Mama Built a Little Nest
by Jennifer Ward and Steve Jenkins

On the Wing by David Elliott and
Becca Stadtlander

Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems
by Joyce Sidman and Beckie Prange

Thank You, Earth by April Pulley Sayre

Thunder Underground by Jane Yolen and
Josée Masse

Volcano Wakes Up! by Lisa Westberg Peters and Steve Jenkins

  1. Thank you very much, Melissa, for including FOREST HAS A SONG on this wonderful list. I so respect your work, and this is an honor. Happy continued National Poetry Month…and Happy Spring! xx

  2. <3 Forest Has a Song (and Every Day Birds) 🙂

Perfectly complementary, and of course pretty much all of Joyce Sidman's books work well here too as well as April's. I absolutely LOVED Thank You, Earth!!

I would also add David Harrison's books, Now You See Them, Now You Don't; his new one, A Place To Start a Family, and many, many more!

    Poetry + Science = <3
