Exploring the Joy of Nonfiction Reading and Writing

Best Nonfiction of 2016 Roundup

Next Monday is the ALA Youth Media Awards, so it seems like a
good time to look back some highly-regarded titles published last year.

There’s no doubt about it. 2016 was a great year for
nonfiction, and it seems like more people were paying attention than ever
before.

Here’s a roundup of the lists I’m aware of. Please let me know if there
are others I should add.

of nonfiction. Time to start reading!

  1. I'm very excited to watch the YMAs! Thanks for compiling all of these great lists, Melissa.

Here's another one from Betsy Bird's December lists, Science & Nature Books for Kids: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2016/12/24/31-days-31-lists-day-24-2016-science-and-nature-books-for-kids/

There are several titles here included in some of her other lists, but a few new ones as well. And she also mentions how science books are often overlooked in favor of biographies. And there's a hat tip to you as well there :).

Thanks for being such a strong advocate for science-y books. And I really appreciate all your support & enthusiasm for Coyote Moon! Can't wait until 2018 when I'll have two NF books releasing.

And looking forward to the Aardvark book! 🙂

  2. Thanks for your note, Maria. My post today is focusing on lists that celebrate nonfiction titles published in 2016. The Science & Nature list you mention features fiction as well as nonfiction titles, so even though it's a good list, it's not appropriate to add here.

I'm a big fan of Coyote Moon and am looking forward to reading your 2018 titles. But for now, I'm excited to dig into what's coming out in 2017.

  3. Thanks so much for compiling these lists and for including my list as well! I am presenting to a school in just over a week about using more nonfiction titles in the classroom and was just about to update my NF resource lists. This will be so helpful! I just had a Skype session with Ricki Ginsberg's preservice students on Wednesday and was sharing a handful of titles I love at the end. I was raving about your book No Monkeys for Chocolate and directed them to your website as such a rich resource. Thanks for all you do!
