Each year at this time, I post a list of my favorite STEM books of the year. I try
to limit it to ten, but there are usually a few extras.
This
year, something AMAZING happened. In November, I was invited to share my top
picks on Science Friday. The show was recorded on Zoom with a live
audience, and an edited version aired on the radio on Black Friday—just in time
for holiday gift giving.
The
show’s producer asked me to choose just three book. OMG, was that hard.
So
hard, that a few days later, I sent a list of twelve more and asked if they
could be included in the show notes. I was prepared to talk about any of these
books, should the opportunity arise. Here are the notecards I made.
Which
three books did I highlight during the broadcast?
The Universe in You: A Microscopic Journey by Jason Chin
Footprints Across the Planet
by Jennifer Swanson
Yoshi and the
Ocean: A Sea Turtle’s incredible Journey Home by Lindsay Moore
I
managed to sneak in one more when host Ira Flatow asked a specific question about
biographies:
Blips
on a Screen: How Ralph Baer Invented TV Video Gaming and Launched a Worldwide
Obsession by
Kate Hannigan, illustrated by Zachariah OHoraAfter
the show, the producer agreed to add two more titles to the show notes, so I
suggested:

Concrete from the Ground Up by
Larissa Theule, illustrated by Steve Light

Good Eating: The Short Life of Krill by Matt Lilley, illustrated by Dan Tavis
And
here are the others that I was hoping to squeeze in, but there just wasn’t time.
If you haven’t read these books yet, now’s the perfect time. And of course,
they make great holiday gifts.![]()
