Celebrate Nonfiction

Exploring the Joy of Nonfiction Reading and Writing

It’s Coming! Seashells: More than a Home

In
just a couple of weeks,
Seashells:
More than a Home, illustrated by Sarah S. Brannen, will be entering the
world. Woo-hoo!

Sarah and I are honored that the book is a Junior Library Guild selection
and received a starred review from Booklist.

To celebrate, Sarah and some family friends worked together
to create this sweet book trailer.

And I created a new video mini-lesson about voice in
nonfiction writing. To view it, click this link and scroll to the bottom of the page.

The video compares the lively voice of Pipsqueaks, Slowpokes, and Stinkers: Celebrating Animal Underdogs
and the lyrical voice of Seashells: More
than a Home. It also provides tips for crafting nonfiction with a strong
voice.

Seashells will be available in bookstores on April 2, but you can
pre-order it now.

  1. The trailer for Seashells is perfect! I love that you have a father and child exploring the book together, and your use of similes to make other connections. When I was in middle school, my first (and only) science fair medal was on "Mollusks." My research (besides going to Lynn & Nahant Beaches) also included the collection at Harvard to which my neighbor had donated her own vast collection to. Wishing you lots of success on this!
