Exploring the Joy of Nonfiction Reading and Writing

5 Kinds of Nonfiction Text Set 4

Because educators have let me know that they’d like
additional text sets to read and discuss with students as they use
this activity to introduce the 5 Kinds of Nonfiction classification system, I’m
sharing four more here this fall. You can scroll down to find text sets built
around the themes of dinosaurs, activism, and fashion.

Today’s
topic is dogs.

Everything
Dogs: All the Canine Facts, Photos, and Fun You
Can Get Your Paws On!
by Becky Baines (browseable)

Golden Retrievers by Sarah Frank (traditional)

If You
Want a Friend in Washington: Wacky, Wild & Wonderful Presidential Pets
by
Erin McGill
(expository literature)

A
Kid’s Guide to Dogs: How to Train, Care for, and Play and Communicate with Your
Amazing Pet!

by Arden Moore (active)

Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine &
a Miracle

Dennis, Kirby Larson, and Mary Nethery (narrative)

You can
purchase these books and use them, or better yet, you can study them as a group
and use what you learn to create your own text sets with books already in your
collection.
